Admission and Application

Candidates who successfully completed a Bachelor’s degree in architecture or landscape architecture are eligible to apply for the Master’s degree program in Landscape Architecture.
The programme is also suitable for architects who already have a Master’s degree and would like to specialise in landscape architecture.
The teaching language is English. To be admitted, proof of sufficient knowledge of English (level C1) must be provided. A motivation letter and a portfolio are required for the application.
 

No. Only candidates who successfully completed a Bachelor’s degree in architecture or landscape architecture from a university with at least 180 ECTS or equivalent are eligible to apply for the Master’s degree program in Landscape Architecture. Students who completed a Bachelor’s degree in architecture or landscape architecture from a Swiss university of applied sciences can also apply. Their admission is always subject to the acquisition of the missing academic and methodological knowledge and skills in the form of additional studies.

ETH masters programmes are full-​time. The MScLA Program is typically completed within five semesters. Depending on the educational background (that is, for students coming from Swiss universities of applied sciences), some incoming students might be required to acquire the missing academic and methodological knowledge and skills in the form of additional studies in order to complete their admission before starting the program. Incoming students are informed of any additional courses required along with their letter of admission to the MScLA Program.

No. The program is full time and very intensive. It’s very hard to find time to work while studying and we would not encourage you to do so.

Semester fees are approximately CHF 700.- (same fees for international students and non-international students), + 150.- application fee, in addition to the costs of living.

MScLA applicants need to submit also some specific documents, such as portfolio, motivation letter and 6-months internship confirmation.

Very important. Once the admission office confirms the eligibility of the candidates based on their formal requirements, the admission committee decides upon the admission of the applicants on their portfolio. It should portray your independent and critical thought, creativity, curiosity and confidence in using different approaches to design, research and methodology. The motivation letter is a crucial part of your application. It should be between 1/2 page to 1 page maximum and highlight your motivation to attend ETH's MSc in Landscape Architecture. The tone and argument should clearly explain why you are an excellent candidate with practical and/or academic experience relevant to the programme.  

Prior work experience in an office substitutes the requirement of six-months internship.

Yes. The internship must first be completed very latest before the start of the studies.

No. However, if you do think they would strategically support your application, you are very welcome to do so. Keep in mind, while a personal recommendation letter can be a great addition to your application, a generic letter is less effective.

The program is in English. To be admitted, proof of sufficient knowledge of English (level C1) must be provided. The language test must be taken very latest on the last day of the application window; the results can be submitted as soon as these are available.
