An open invitation to join the Chair of Being Alive for a week of getting their hands dirty:
WHAT WILL WE DO?
We will spend a week at Cima Città to do fieldwork – we will study soils, vegetation, trees and other living systems on site, using manuals we have developed at the Chair of Being Alive at ETH Zurich. The Chair is working on a collection of fieldwork methods that are as simple and accessible as possible, without the need for expensive equipment or niche expertise. The goal of the week is to create a space to test and further develop these methods, learn new ones, share ideas with each other and go into the field!
SCHEDULE?
The workshop will be informal with a flexible program, but nevertheless committed to the ambition of collective learning. Among other things, we plan to do soil sampling, soil chromatography, tree reading and vegetation surveys. Most written instructions will be in English, but we speak German, Spanish, Catalan, French and some Italian.
The chair will be present Monday through Friday, but participants may also come for shorter visits; a day, an afternoon or just dropping in for dinner. We look forward to anyone who wants to visit. It is also possible to extend the residency over the weekend and do some hiking, f.e. visit the nearby dam of Lago di Luzzone or the Lukmanier Pass.
COSTS
We will be hosted by external page Cima Città, an interdisciplinary residency space in the Blenio Valley in Ticino. If you will stay overnight at the Cima Città, you’ll be asked to pay a contribution for accommodation of around 25 CHF/night and additional costs for food and drinks. Travel between Zurich and Ticino will be covered by ETH. If you would like to participate but the price is too high, please let us know and we will surely find a solution.
HOW TO JOIN?
The week is open for everybody who’s interested in the topic of fieldwork – whether ETH or not, gardeners or gamers, nerds or amateurs – to join us for a week of learning. Write an e-mail to no later than the end of July, if you would like to participate.
